A Thirty-Year War—If Americans Will Have It
Craig Biddle October 9, 2014
Leon Panetta, former director of the CIA and secretary of defense, says that defeating our enemies in the Middle East and North Africa will require a thirty-year war. The only reason Americans will accept a long war is that they have lost (or never gained) confidence in their right to defend themselves against those who seek to kill them.

State Department Endorses Handbook Calling Jihad “Noble”
Craig Biddle October 8, 2014
The U.S. State Department has endorsed a handbook titled United Against Terrorism, published by a Muslim group in Canada. The handbook recommends (among other things) that "Jihad is a noble concept in Islam." Will Americans continue to permit our government to call our Islamic enemy a non-Islamic enemy?

On the Foundation for Economic Education’s website, Max Borders and Craig Biddle debate the question of whether liberty is best defended by reference to a single, demonstrably true moral foundation or a diversity of moral perspectives. Check out the debate, and vote for the side you think makes the most sense.

The Jihad Against America and How to End It
Craig Biddle September 10, 2014
While Islamic State, al Qaeda, and the like multiply and expand throughout the Middle East, now is a good time to recount the essential nature of the problem and to specify the solution. Although these groups have murdered many Americans and aim to murder many more, they are not the fundamental problem. The fundamental problem is the Islamic regimes in Iran and Saudi Arabia, which spawn and sponsor such groups.

Burgess Laughlin: A Man who Made Progress
Craig Biddle August 30, 2014
I just received the sad news that Burgess Laughlin has died. I had the pleasure of working with him on a couple of reviews he wrote for The Objective Standard. He was a good, thoughtful, benevolent man, who took ideas seriously, practiced the principles he recognized as true, and lived his life with purpose and verve. —Craig Biddle

Moral Diversity: Asset or Liability for Liberty?
Craig Biddle August 20, 2014
In May, at a conference cosponsored by FEE and the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism, Max Borders and Craig Biddle debated the question, "Moral diversity: asset or liability for the liberty movement?"—and the discussion was, by all accounts, profoundly interesting. We present in this issue of TOS the transcript of that debate.

From the Editor, Fall 2014
Craig Biddle August 20, 2014
Welcome to the Fall 2014 issue of The Objective Standard. “Gifts from Heaven”: A Vital Historic Lesson for America
Craig Biddle August 11, 2014
John David Lewis’s article “‘Gifts from Heaven’: The Meaning of the American Victory over Japan, 1945” has profound implications regarding both the principles of a proper U.S. foreign policy and the clear and present threats to America today. Americans must learn its lessons if we are to defend ourselves against the Islamic barbarians who seek to kill us.

Hamas and The Left’s Pretense about the Deaths of Innocents in Gaza
Craig Biddle August 3, 2014
Who is morally responsible for the deaths of innocents in Gaza, such as Gazan children, who are killed by Israeli bombs? Hamas is. And this fact is clear to anyone who chooses to think beyond the frame of a television.

Now Multiple IRS Hard Drives Crashed—Coincidence?
Craig Biddle July 22, 2014
As the Daily Caller reports, it turns out that the hard drives of various other IRS officials who communicated with Lois Lerner also crashed. Reassuringly, though, according to IRS Deputy Associate Chief Counsel Thomas Kane, the total number of related crashes is still “less than 20”! As Remy asks, "What are the Chances?"

Why You and I and Everyone Should Support Israel Against the Barbarians
Craig Biddle July 21, 2014
I was going to write something brief about the clear-cut situation in Israel and Gaza, but then I listened to Pat Condell’s near-perfect commentary on the matter and decided simply to share his video. Watch it, share it, and, of course, stand with Israel. But, importantly, also demand of your congressional representatives that they vocally support Israel.

What to Celebrate on Independence Day
Craig Biddle July 4, 2014
America came as close as any society has ever come to establishing an exclusively rights-protecting government. Americans were almost fully free to live their own lives, by their own judgment, for their own sake. This is the moral ideal we should embrace and redouble our efforts to achieve.

Auberon Herbert: Advocate of Reason, Individual Rights, and Limited Government
Craig Biddle June 26, 2014
Auberon Herbert (1838–1906) was a 19th-century British political philosopher and a member of Parliament, who recognized that each individual has inalienable rights to direct his own mind and body, and to keep and use the product of his own effort. In defense of these rights, Herbert advocated a strictly limited, voluntarily funded, rights-protecting government.
