In this episode of Reason at Large, Craig Biddle answers a question from Nick: “What are the main obstacles to a foreign policy of rational self-defense for America?”
In answering, Biddle notes Americans’ lack of conviction that we actually have rights and that our government’s moral purpose is to protect them; he then examines the fundamental cause of this condition: bad philosophy—specifically, widespread acceptance of altruism, subjectivism, and religion; finally, he indicates that the solution to the problem is for Americans to understand and embrace the philosophy of reality, reason, and rational self-interest—Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism—which undergirds the principle of rights, grounds it in perceptual reality, and thus supports the rational conviction necessary for Americans to demand that our government protect our rights against foreign aggressors who seek to harm us.
